Dear Friends,

As you read this I will be on my way to Virginia to an eight day conference called CREDO. Here is some information about CREDO.

CREDO began in 1994 – a benefit of the Church Pension Group. Since then over 100 conferences have been held with Priests, Deacons and Bishops from virtually every diocese in the country participating.

Over the course of the conference, participants will meet in plenary sessions, small groups and private consultations with faculty members. There is also ample quiet time to reflect on personal and professional lives.

Before going, each participant commits to extensive reflection through pre-conference instruments and surveys that focus on personal and professional wellness. The work of CREDO is organized around four major areas – spiritual, vocational, health and financial.

·         Spiritual – offers a sacred space where each participant can reflect on their interior life and relationship with God in Christ.

·         Vocational – provides opportunities for reflection, discernment, and planning in the professional areas of vocation, career, and work.

·         Health – encourages reflection on physical and emotional health and well-being, stewardship of the body, and development of a plan to address the individual’s health needs.

·         Financial – explores all aspects of personal financial management and encourages reflection on God-given resources and how best to use them in response to God’s call.

As you can see, I will be busy – but in a good way. I am taking a couple of

additional days to visit my sister in North Carolina.; all in all a log period of rest, reflection, and time to look ahead. I will be back in church on Sunday July 15. If you would like more information about CREDO, there are copies of the “Vestry Papers” publication from 2006 which focused on CREDO and clergy wellness in the office.

                    Healing Prayers

Did you know that anointing with oil and laying on of hands with prayers for healing are very Episcopalian? The anointing bring images of Roman Catholic priests performing “the last rites” for someone who is dying. But in the Episcopal Church, along with the laying on of hands and prayer, the anointing is the visible sign of our prayers for healing. The Eucharist service on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 is a service of healing with anointing and prayers offered for those in need following the Eucharist. If you are feeling so led, please join us.

                                                                          Page 2

Start Up!  Start Over!

Our work groups are well on their way.

  • Events – St. John’s will be having an information booth at the Peach Festival this year. See Dianna Montague if you would be willing to man the booth for one or more hours during the time of the festival. We will have information to be given away. We are also planning a great Oktoberfest. This will be a “gift” to the community with the church paying for the event and all proceeds going to a community charity that has yet to be named. We will be having a live band and a plastic beer mug will be given to each who attend.
  • Media – We are currently researching the cost of hiring a professional to help get our website up and running. Websites are the most important advertising we can invest in. So this is needed and in important to our ability to bring folks in.
  • Guest Relations – We are going to continue taking pies to those who have worshiped

with us for the first time. We are developing plans for a “greeter” desk in the narthex and will be recruiting folks to be greeters at both services on Sunday mornings. We are also planning how to track our communication with newcomers and incorporate them into the congregation.

·         Worship – We have made some changes in the season of Pentecost worship booklet for 10am. There is a new version of the Prayers of the People. Over the summer, we

will be exploring new music setting for the service music and other options for enhancing worship.

  • Physical Plant – Have not met formally yet, but there are a lot of ideas flowing. The first item of business is how we can make the narthex more welcoming.

Everyone is welcome to participate. So if you haven’t gotten involved yet, but see something that interests you, contact the group leader (names are posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.)

St. John’s 101 Class

Because we have newcomers who may not be familiar with St. John’s or the Episcopal Church, Pastor Dori will be leading a “St. John’s 101” class. This will begin in the late summer or early September and will be a review for those attending who are members of St. John’s or new information for those who are new or unfamiliar with the Episcopal Church. Watch for more information in the July and August “St. John’s Alive”

                  Guest Committee News

The “Guest Committee” group is looking for

Volunteers in the following areas:

  • Greeters to form a “welcome team”. Each team will consist of 2 people, on designated Sundays. If enough volunteer, each team may cover just one Sunday per month.

·         P.I.E. Committee- Deliver a homemade or bakery pie within a week of guest visiting St. Johns. (Persons Involved in Evangelism)

·         Buddy System - Parishioner will introduce and assist our newcomer (on their 3rd visit) in a variety of ways; while making them feel comfortable with their new surroundings.

Our next group meeting will be on June 17th @ 2:30 pm.  Please join us if you are interested, or contact the church office.

FOOD SHELF NEWS:

On May 10th the Post Office held its annual food drive, and St. John's was one of the beneficiaries.  Enough food to fill all out shelves was received.  Volunteers from St. John's who helped included Mary Denny Silva, Dianna Montague-Henry, Robynne Seward, and Brance and Judd Waggoman.  Many thanks to all of them for their help.

Also, Virginia and Marino Rosellini, who manage St. Joseph's Food Shelf, also helped by delivering food to St. John's.

A meeting of all Food Shelf volunteers   will be held on June 18 at 1 p.m. at the church.

    BOOK REPORT…..By Harry Fox

From the book case…..The Holy man’s Journey by Susan Trott. This story picks up the journey when Anna, who has been recognized by the Holy Man as his successor, sets off with him to visit his former teacher. The journey is used as a learning experience for Anna and as a spiritual cure for his corrupted mentor. The story with its wit and wise view point is well worth a read.    FOUNDING DAY OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS

                                 June 10, 1935

Alcoholics Anonymous has been instrumental in liberating millions from the slavery of alcohol.  Its success is founded in good part on a deep spiritual belief in God—by whatever name you wish to give this Reality beyond yourself.  It is also base on companionship with others who are in the process of, or seeking to begin, becoming free, and on a confession of faults.  Those who have been thus freed, along with their friends and family, should acknowledge the inspired creation of this group called AA.

Sunday School Chuckles
I was testing the children in my Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven.
I asked them, 'If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?'  -  No the children answered.

'If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?'
Again, the answer was, 'NO!'  By now I was starting to smile.

Hey, this was fun!  'Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?' I asked them again. Again, they all answered, 'NO!'

I was just bursting with pride for them.  'Well,' I continued, 'then how can I get into Heaven?'  A five-year-old boy shouted out 'YOU GOTTA BE DEAD.'
